The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner’s Cup is one of three conferences in the league’s season. The competition features a single-round robin format, with the top four teams progressing to the semifinals. The semifinals and finals are best-of-five series, respectively. The Commissioner’s Cup is the PBA’s second conference. It is also the only league that allows clubs to bring in a single international player, known as a “import.” Because clubs may field their top players, the Commissioner’s Cup becomes a more intriguing and competitive conference. The Commissioner’s Cup is also one of the most popular PBA conferences. Because the top teams in the conference generally compete for the title, it is frequently viewed as a preview of the playoffs.
The PBA Commissioner’s Cup is among the most important competitions in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), the Philippines’ professional basketball league. It is one of three conferences comprising the PBA season, the Philippine Cup, and the Governors’ Cup.
This conference distinguishes out for one reason in particular: the import players. Each club is permitted to field an import, adding excitement and rivalry to the games. The PBA Commissioner’s Cup, which takes place from April to July, has been a fixture on the PBA schedule since its beginning.
The Commissioner’s Cup is named after the late PBA commissioner Rudy Salud. Salud pioneered Philippine basketball and was instrumental in creating the PBA. The Commissioner’s Cup was first staged in 1993 as the PBA’s second conference. When the Invitational Championship was revived in 2003, it was replaced. After the league re-adopted the three-conference system in 2011, it was re-instated as the second conference of the PBA season.
Several PBA teams have carved their names in history as Commissioner’s Cup champions. These winners have imprinted in Philippine basketball history by displaying remarkable collaboration, skill, and dedication. From its inception in 1993, this tournament has consistently showcased the best of Philippine basketball. Over the years, legendary teams such as the San Miguel Beermen, Alaska Milkmen, and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel have etched their names into the annals of basketball history, demonstrating their prowess and skill on the court.
