Magnolia Hotshots' Coach Chito Reflects on Mental Breakdown in PBA Finals Loss
Chito Victolero, the Magnolia Hotshots’ head coach, was confronted with a harsh reality following their Game 6 defeat to San Miguel in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals. Initially, it appeared that the Hotshots had the game firmly in their hands, set to force a Game 7. However, as the clock wound down, their fortunes changed dramatically.
The critical moment occurred in the final six minutes of the game, when the Hotshots’ composure appeared to waver, allowing San Miguel to launch an incredible comeback. Despite Magnolia’s gallant attempts throughout the match, their mental fortitude failed when it counted the most, eventually losing them the championship.
“It’s disappointing to lose in such a manner, especially considering how well we had controlled the game until that point,” Victolero complained, his irritation evident as he addressed the media in the melancholy atmosphere of the Magnolia dugout.
San Miguel’s recovery was led by CJ Perez, Jericho Cruz, and seasoned campaigner Chris Ross, who made critical plays down the line. Despite Magnolia’s double-digit lead with only seven minutes left, they could not survive San Miguel’s persistent offensive barrage.
Magnolia’s failure to guard the ball significantly affected their defeat, as indicated by 17 turnovers to San Miguel’s 14. These turnovers proved costly, as San Miguel capitalized on them to outscore the Hotshots in points off turnovers, further tipping the balance in their favor.
Victolero and his team’s displeasure was apparent despite entering the playoffs as favorites after clinching the top seed. Their domination was evident throughout the conference, culminating in a fantastic 11-game sweep of the preseason On Tour. However, they fell short when it counted the most, emphasizing the need for mental toughness in high-stakes scenarios.
“I applaud my guys for their perseverance and effort until the end. However, we must admit our weaknesses in the mental element of the game and aim to improve moving ahead,” said Victolero, his remarks showing a combination of pride in his team’s efforts and resolve to rectify their faults.
As they ponder this sad loss, Magnolia realizes they must learn from it and emerge more decisive in their drive for future success.
