Tropa advances to PBA 47th Final Season 2023, sets up heavyweight battle with Ginebra Kings
The Tropang Giga’s victory over the Bolts in the semifinals of the PBA Governors’ Cup was dominant, with the team’s lethal combination of scoring power and defense proving too much for their opponents to handle. Import Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was a standout performer, putting up an incredible 42 points while also contributing 11 rebounds and three assists. His teammates also stepped up to the plate, with Calvin Oftana scoring 21 points off the bench and Mikey Williams and RR Pogoy adding 17 and 16 points, respectively.
The win sees the Tropang Giga advance to the championship series against three-time defending champions Ginebra, marking a rematch between the two teams who ruled the league’s All-Filipino bubble tourneys in 2021 and 2022. TNT’s head coach, Jojo Lastimosa, credited his players for their impressive performance, saying they “answered the call” when it mattered most. Lastimosa will now be faced with the daunting task of going up against his longtime mentor, Ginebra coach Tim Cone, in what promises to be an epic best-of-seven series.
Hollis-Jefferson’s impressive display was a key factor in the Tropang Giga’s victory, but he quickly acknowledged the importance of composure and fighting spirit in overcoming their opponents. He said, “a deep breath is the nervous system’s best friend.” The Tropa will need to maintain this fighting spirit and composure if they are to stand a chance against Ginebra, who will be looking to secure their fourth consecutive title in the PBA Governors’ Cup.
