TNT vs. Ginebra Game 1: Exciting PBA Governors' Cup Matchup 2023
The Barangay Ginebra Kings continued their impressive form in the PBA Governors’ Cup playoffs after the Lenten break, defeating the TNT Tropang Giga in the opening game of the finals. The Kings maintained their perfect record in the post-elimination rounds, winning their fifth consecutive game.
Justin Brownlee was the standout performer for Ginebra, scoring 31 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. His teammates Jamie Malonzo, Christian Standhardinger, Scottie Thompson, and Stanley Pringle received significant contributions. Malonzo was particularly impressive, scoring 21 points and achieving a triple-double with ten rebounds and 11 assists, while Standhardinger recorded a double-double with 16 and 11 rebounds.
Despite missing some key players, Ginebra dominated the game, with an 18-point lead over TNT. The Tropang Giga struggled without their big men as Kelly Williams and Justin Chua were sidelined due to injury.
Ginebra’s sharpness and competitiveness remained intact after the 10-day break, and their superior performance proved too much for TNT.
Brownlee’s 5-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc in the first quarter set the tone for the game, and the Kings made 15 of 36 three-pointers, shooting 41% from beyond the arc, while TNT made only 9 of 35 attempts.
Although TNT fought hard, with Rondae Hollis-Jefferson scoring 30 points and 20 rebounds and Mikey Williams contributing 23 points with five three-pointers, Ginebra’s overall shooting percentage of 43% was too much for them to overcome, as they shot only 38% from the field.
The Kings now lead the series 1-0, and Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Ginebra will continue their dominant form and extend their unbeaten playoff run, while TNT hopes to bounce back and level the series.
