Sangalang’s return to the court has been extraordinary since his PBA career was briefly disrupted by hyperthyroidism, which stimulates the body’s metabolism and results in fast weight loss. His last official PBA game came in January, and he was forced to miss the rest of the previous season’s Governors’ Cup due to hyperthyroidism.

Sangalang reflected on his experience, saying, “When I was losing weight, we were unaware that I was suffering from hyperthyroidism at the time.” But, thank goodness, it was detected sooner. That’s why, even when I slept, my body continued to work as if I were still playing basketball. My cells were continually operating.”

Despite the setback, Sangalang returned to the court for three games for Magnolia in the offseason PBA On Tour competition. However, he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a thyroid ailment that causes the body’s metabolism to slow down. This provided a new set of issues, leaving Sangalang with the impression that something was wrong. “It felt like I was still not okay, like I was missing something,” he stated. It became hypo since I was growing at the time.”

Sangalang took radioactive iodine therapy to address his thyroid concerns and make a complete comeback for the following season. The therapy was effective, and the 31-year-old forward is in outstanding physical shape. “It worked because I feel normal again,” he said joyfully. I am very sure that I am prepared for this meeting.”

The Magnolia Hotshots aim to snap a five-year title drought with the return of Ian Sangalang to the roster. Their most recent PBA championship came in the 2018 Governors’ Cup. The squad is preparing for the Commissioner’s Cup, which begins on Sunday, November 5, at the Araneta Coliseum versus TNT. Sangalang’s return will undoubtedly provide depth and strength to the Hotshots’ squad as they strive to win the coveted championship.
