Zavier Lucero Completes Remarkable Recovery from ACL Injury and Prepares for PBA Debut
Zavier Lucero, a former UP Maroons standout, overcame severe difficulties, including a career-threatening ACL injury, to pursue his ambition of playing in the PBA. Lucero, injured during his last season at the University of the Philippines in 2022, has endured an incredible recovery journey to successfully return to the basketball floor.
Despite the difficulties presented by his injuries, Lucero remained resolute and committed to his recovery. His patience and determination paid off, as he just made his much-anticipated PBA debut, representing NorthPort.
In his debut game with NorthPort, Lucero showed flashes of his talent and promise, scoring 13 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks. Lucero concedes that he is still adjusting to the tempo of professional basketball after being out for more than a year, but he remains hopeful about his improvement.
“It’s getting there,” said Lucero. I felt nice outside. I’m just getting back into my rhythm. This is my first game in more than a year. I’m just glad I got it through, and my knees are still intact.”
The 6-foot-7 forward’s road to the PBA has been nothing short of inspirational. Lucero’s perseverance and resolve remained unwavering despite the uncertainties surrounding his condition. He thanked NorthPort for their constant support during his recovery, which allowed him to pursue therapy in the United States to guarantee a complete recovery.
“I’m grateful to NorthPort for letting me do that so I can come back and feel comfortable about being back,” he said.
During his recovery, Lucero concentrated on gaining muscle mass in preparation for the PBA’s physical demands. He committed himself to strength and fitness, adding an astonishing 30 pounds to prepare for professional basketball.
Lucero’s effect goes beyond the attacking end of the court. While he recognizes the need to rediscover his offensive rhythm, he stays committed to defense, underlining its importance in his game.
“That’s a part of my game that I’ll never give up,” said Lucero. “Whenever I have a chance to make a play on defense, I’m going for it.”
As Lucero progresses through the PBA, his perseverance, work ethic, and defensive skills make him a vital asset to Northport and a player to watch in the league’s future.
