Samboy Lim Honored in Moving Ceremony at SMB Game
Avelino “Samboy” Lim Jr., a late Filipino basketball hero, was honored posthumously at a recent Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) game. On Christmas Day, the Phoenix Super LPG Fuel Masters played off against Lim’s previous squad, the San Miguel Beermen (SMB), in the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
At halftime, the PBA held a touching ceremony called the “final buzzer” to honor the great “Skywalker.” As the Beermen trailed Phoenix 58-54, spectators rose and gave the revered basketball great a standing ovation.
The coliseum echoed, “Samboy, may you fly high and free like the Skywalker you were known to be.” The emotional environment represented the basketball community’s strong esteem and adoration for Lim.
The San Miguel Beermen defeated Phoenix by a total score of 117-96. Terrence Romeo was named player of the game after playing a crucial part in the team’s comeback in the second half.
From 1986 until 1997, Avelino “Samboy” Lim Jr. spent his professional basketball career with the San Miguel Beermen. His history includes nine titles with the squad and five PBA All-Star appearances. The Beermen retired his jersey number, #9, recognizing his enormous accomplishments.
Lim’s cremated ashes are presently being held at the Colegio Chapel in the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Intramuros, Manila, where he once showed his skill as a member of the Knights during his academic career. On Wednesday, December 27, the remains will be transferred to the Arlington Memorial Chapels in Quezon City, with the interment slated on Friday, December 29, in the Garden of the Divine Word Columbarium in Quezon City.
According to a statement from the Lim family, individuals whom Samboy’s influence has impacted are encouraged to share their words with the family via Viber or handwritten letters. This gesture underscores the basketball icon’s life-changing influence on people who idolized him.
