Converge First Win in PBA Commissioners Cup 2023

Converge First win in PBA Commissioner's Cup

CONVERGE snapped their losing streak with a stunning overtime victory over Terrafirma in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup at the PhilSports Arena.

Import Jamil Wilson was instrumental in the victory, scoring a game-high 32 points, including five consecutive baskets in overtime that powered Converge to an 11-0 lead. This surge shifted the tide, transforming them from an 88-90 deficit to a dominating 99-90 advantage.

The FiberXers showed tenacity, breaking loose from their 0-6 start to the season and a problematic 10-game losing record stretching back to the last Governors Cup. Converge’s head coach, Aldin Ayo, praised the team’s fortitude in adversity, adding, “It was tough. Because of the results of our previous games, everyone felt unhappy and upset.”

Jamil Wilson, a substitute import who played only his second game, credited the team’s victory to more excellent bonding. He emphasized the importance of the practice week, saying, “Chemistry is the most important thing in basketball.” I didn’t know half of these guys’ names when I arrived. So just a week of practice… getting to know these individuals, what they want to do, makes a world of difference.”

Terrafirma, on the other side, lost their third game in a row, falling to a 2-5 record. Despite outstanding efforts from Juami Tiongson (28 points) and contributions from Stephen Holt and Thomas de Thaey, the Dyip fell short in overtime against Converge. Their effort was highlighted by Javi Gomez de Liano’s double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds, including a game-tying triple.

Terrafirma’s 25 turnovers, on the other hand, were costly, as Converge capitalized on them to score 24 points. The Dyip will play powerful opponents such as Magnolia, San Miguel Beer, Meralco, and Rain or Shine in their forthcoming schedule.

“It’s still 1-6, so in a way disappointed pa rin kami, frustrated pa rin kami, masama pa rin pakiramdam namin sa mga talo,” Coach Ayo said, noting the team’s improvements but underlining the need for additional growth. But we’re not going anywhere. There is (remains) hope. We’re going to keep improving and putting this squad together.”

Converge 103, Winston 17, Arana 14, Stockton 9, Nieto 7, Racal 6, Delos Santos 6, Wong 5, Balanza 4, Santos 3, Ambohot 0; Terrafirma 94, Tiongson 28, Holt 14, Gomez de Liano 13, De Thaey 12, Ramos 6, Alolino 5, Camson 5, Carino 4, Cahilig 3, Calvo 2, Miller 2, Go 0, Daquioag 0. The game proceeded, with quarters concluding at 18-22, 43-38, 60-63, and 88-88, with Converge winning 103-94.
