Ageless Asi Taulava's PBA Return: A Remarkable Comeback in NLEX's Commissioner's Cup
Veteran center Asi Taulava is expected to make an impressive PBA comeback when he is reactivated for NLEX’s Commissioner’s Cup showdown versus sister team TNT. Taulava, 50, is ready to break the record of the PBA’s sole “Living Legend,” Robert “Sonny” Jaworski, who is in his 25th season in the renowned basketball league.
Taulava’s reactivation was revealed on social media by NLEX on Tuesday. The player, affectionately known as the “Rock,” last appeared on November 9, 2022, in a scoreless effort against NorthPort in the 2022-23 Commissioner’s Cup. The historic event of his comeback will be marked by the official retiring of Taulava’s shirt at halftime in Pasig City’s Philsports Arena.

Taulava’s stellar career includes 17 PBA All-Star appearances, two All-Star Game MVPs, four Mythical First Team honors, and three All-Defensive Team nods. Despite the highs, Taulava endured hardships throughout his PBA career, playing for teams like the Coca-Cola Tigers, Meralco Bolts, and Air21 until joining NLEX in 2014.
After leaving Meralco, Taulava joined San Miguel Beer in the ASEAN Basketball League, guiding the club to the regional crown and winning the MVP award.
Taulava is nearing the end of his spectacular PBA career, with career averages of 13.7 points and 10.3 rebounds over more than 600 games.
