Jamie Malonzo Apologizes for Viral Video
Jamie Malonzo of Barangay Ginebra has apologized for a viral video that showed him in a violent brawl. Malonzo confirmed his involvement through PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial and apologized for the event, claiming a misunderstanding.
The viral video showed Malonzo seeming intoxicated and on the receiving end of violent abuse inside an unidentified fast-food restaurant. While the video was quickly deleted, it traveled rapidly throughout social media sites, gaining worldwide attention.
The time and location of the confrontation have not been reported, leaving details unclear. To complicate matters, Malonzo’s absence from the game versus Chinese Taipei was ascribed to severe gastroenteritis, exacerbated by a recent positive COVID-19 diagnostic following his return from Hong Kong.
Gilas’s head coach, Tim Cone, provided insight on Malonzo’s health issues, stating that Malonzo and teammate Justin Brownlee became unwell during their Hong Kong trip. While Brownlee recovered in time for the game, Malonzo’s health required hospitalization; thus, he was unable to play.
As conversations between the parties continue, both the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas and Barangay Ginebra have yet to release any remarks about the event. However, indications indicate that measures to solve the issue have already begun.
The episode serves as a sobering reminder of the problems that athletes confront on and off the court, emphasizing the significance of accountability and communication in handling such circumstances.
