Northport Seeking Redemption vs. Struggling Blackwater
Northport is desperate to snap their two-game losing streak as they play the struggling Blackwater squad to secure a berth in the PBA Season 48 Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals. Bonnie Tan’s team, presently 5-4, has worked hard to position itself positively in the tournament.
The next game against Blackwater (1-8) is a critical opportunity for Batang Pier to attain the coveted six-win milestone. Blackwater has struggled for success, making it a good matchup for Northport.
Despite recent defeats, NorthPort must address consistency concerns that have plagued them throughout the season. The club started well with two consecutive wins but suffered two defeats before winning three straight games, including significant victories over TNT and San Miguel. They did, however, finish 2023 with two defeats.
Arvin Tolentino has stepped up as a leader in the absence of Robert Bolick, who was moved to NLEX. Tolentino, the league’s leading local scorer, has been a vital contributor, working alongside coach Bonnie Tan. Cade Flores, Fran Yu, and Brent Paraiso are young players who have displayed maturity and composure over the years.
Import Venky Jois and previous first-round choice Joshua Munzon have also played essential roles in NorthPort’s squad, forming a team capable of upsetting the established order. A win against Blackwater would remove any stumbling blocks in the fight for the remaining quarterfinal slots and improve NorthPort’s confidence and momentum.
The victory would be critical in a tight race against TNT (4-5), Rain or Shine (4-5), NLEX (3-7), and potentially Terrafirma (2-7). Securing a position in the Last-8 will provide NorthPort more confidence and momentum moving into their last elimination round clash on Sunday against playoff-bound Barangay Ginebra.
The Blackwater crew, led by Jeff Cariaso, is unlikely to go through the motions. They want to end the season on a high note, hoping to do something significant in their final two games before moving on to the next conference. The next matchup promises to be pivotal, with postseason ramifications for both clubs.
