The FiberXers selected Winston as the ninth overall choice in the draft. He is a youthful star who adds a new viewpoint to the game. His path to the PBA has been distinguished by exceptional performances and a desire to make an impact on the floor.
Winston’s talent was displayed during his last season with the La Salle Green Archers when he continually excelled with his all-around game. He was a top contender for the UAAP MVP award last season, averaging 14.9 points per game, 4.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.1 steals before injuries hampered his growth.
Despite being a top choice in multiple mock drafts, Winston stays exceptionally humble. He appreciates the opportunity to join Converge and respects the process that took him to the ninth pick in the draft. “I was drafted where I was drafted,” he said on draft day. I’m glad they selected me and eager to compete for them.”
The anticipation in Winston’s voice as he prepares to take the court is apparent. He’s excited to show off his abilities and leave a lasting impression in the PBA, especially after devoting time to preparation. Winston’s trip involved a calf injury rehabilitation procedure, which he meticulously tackled.
The next PBA season begins on November 5, giving Pingris plenty of time to prepare if he decides to make a comeback.
Coach Jeff Cariaso, surprisingly, was the one who first suggested hiring Pingris as the big men’s coach, especially given Blackwater’s young and potential big men like Ato Ular and newcomers Christian David and Clifford Jopia.
Winston elaborated on his travels, saying, “I was back in the States, finishing my rehab.” And then, after recovery, simply getting my body back in condition and performance to compete again… I’m no longer in pain. I’m prepared to compete.
“I’m ready to play right now.”
SCHONNY Winston’s road to the PBA demonstrates his tenacity and commitment. As he dons the Converge jersey for the 2018 PBA Season 48, supporters and basketball fans alike are looking forward to his influence on the team and the league as a whole.
