PBA Semifinals Ginebra First Blood 2024

SMB wins Game 1 of PBA Semifinals vs Ginebra!

San Miguel Beer (SMB) defeated Barangay Ginebra 92-90 in the first game of the PBA 48th Season Commissioner’s Cup semifinals at Smart-Araneta Coliseum. CJ Perez emerged as a significant player for the Beermen, scoring a game-high 26 points, including clutch baskets that helped them a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five showdown.

The game took an unexpected turn when Ginebra momentarily took the lead at 79-73, thanks to Scottie Thompson’s tough layup and Japeth Aguilar’s jumper. However, Perez organized a 7-0 run, scoring the final five points alone, to shift the momentum back to San Miguel. Perez continued to shine, scoring four more points to push the Beermen’s advantage to 90-85 with 2:35 left on the clock.

Perez’s effect was not limited to scoring; he also significantly contributed to rebounding. He recovered a crucial offensive rebound, which resulted in a critical free throw by June Mar Fajardo, increasing San Miguel’s lead to 91-90. Perez’s ensuing possession resulted in another opportunity for the Beermen, as he tipped the ball to Chris Ross following a failed shot by Christian Standhardinger. Despite Ross missing two free shots, Ginebra battled on the boards, resulting in another free throw by Fajardo for a 92-90 edge.

San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent praised the players for their defensive stops when necessary and their ability to perform in critical situations. Bennie Boatwright also had a significant impact for the Beermen, ending with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and five assists, while Fajardo had 18 points and nine rebounds.

Christian Standhardinger led Ginebra’s effort with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while Tony Bishop contributed 20 points and 11 boards. Despite their performances, Ginebra couldn’t make the necessary stops in the crucial moments.

The series will resume with Game 2 on Friday at the Mall of Asia Arena, with San Miguel looking to extend their advantage to 2-0.
