SMB Slashed MAG in PBA Finals Game 1
In a closely contested battle, the San Miguel Beermen managed to edge out the Magnolia Hotshots with a 103-95 victory in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals opening game at the MOA Arena on Friday night. Despite facing a potential meltdown as Magnolia narrowed the gap to just five points in the fourth quarter, San Miguel showcased resilience and strategic plays to secure the crucial win in the race-to-four Finals series.
Bennie Boatwright emerged as a critical player for the Beermen, delivering an outstanding performance with 28 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, a steal, and two blocks. San Miguel dominated the second period with a remarkable 41-point surge but faced challenges in the later stages as Magnolia tightened their defense.
The Hotshots, led by Tyler Bey’s impressive 26 points and 15 rebounds, staged a late comeback, reducing San Miguel’s 20-point lead to just five. Sparing no effort, Joseph Eriobu’s contributions were vital in Magnolia’s push. However, San Miguel held their ground, securing the win through crucial free throws from CJ Perez, June Mar Fajardo, and Jeron Teng.
Perez contributed 19 points, Marcio Lassiter added 16, and June Mar Fajardo recorded a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.
Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday at the same venue, promising another intense matchup between the two powerhouse teams. San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent credited his team’s composure in critical moments for the Game 1 triumph, emphasizing the players’ ability to stay focused and execute winning strategies.
Despite Magnolia’s persistent efforts to narrow the gap, San Miguel’s strategic plays and key contributions secured the victory in the opening game of the Finals. The stage is set for an exciting series as both teams aim to claim the coveted Commissioner’s Cup title.
