SMC gives a hand to SBP as a sign of solidarity
Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) appointed San Miguel Corporation (SMC) sports director Alfrancis Chua as executive advisor of both the cage body and the Gilas Pilipinas team, by its call for a unified basketball front as the country prepares for the 2023 FIBA World Cup campaign and hosting.

Among the important decisions made by the basketball federation on Tuesday at the PLDT headquarters in Makati was the selection of Chua as president.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial, who is among the SBP’s stakeholders, announced the employment of Chua, whose involvement in the national team’s affairs is mostly that of an active consultant.
“Malaki ang role niya sa Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas. So malaking tulong, “Governor of Barangay Ginebra Marcial stated.
Chua initiated the process by recommending to Gilas Pilipinas coach and project director Chot Reyes. The players chosen to the national team pool for the upcoming window of FIBA World Cup qualifiers. They will begin training every Monday.
Gusto niya yung practice (ng Gilas) every Monday na. Pero pag-uusapan pa rin kung paano.”
Chot Reyes welcomes Chua’s addition to the national team, noting that he has been in close contact with the SMC athletic director.
The national team coach said, “I wholeheartedly embrace it; we’re all-inclusive.”

Marcial emphasized that Reyes retains ultimate authority over all Gilas and national team concerns.
“Ang masusunod pa rin naman (si Chot). Magbibigay lang siya ng advise (Chua). Tingin ko hindi naman magkaka-problema,” added the commissioner.
