After beating Meralco 89-78 in Game 5 on Friday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum, SAN Miguel is almost back in the PBA Philippine Cup Finals.
After being behind 44-41 at halftime, the Beermen took back control of the game in the third quarter, thanks to Jericho Cruz and CJ Perez. During that stretch, Cruz and Perez each had nine points. Then, after the Bolts made a late comeback, Rodney Brondial made a big play to keep the win.
San Miguel now has a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series and is getting closer to completing the all-Filipino finals for the first time since 2019. “The third quarter was the most important,” said coach Leo Austria after a game in which the Beermen shot 55 percent from the floor and held Meralco to 28 percent.
“What happened was that we kept running the same plays and didn’t change our defense.” Perez finished with 25 points, nine rebounds, and five assists, which was the most for his team. Cruz had 17 points and started a 13-0 run that gave San Miguel a 59-50 lead after they were behind by four points early in the third quarter.
But the Bolts fought back in the fourth quarter thanks to Chris Newsome and Aaron Black. After Allein Maliksi’s fourth and last three-pointer of the night, they were only 78-76 behind with 3:08 left.
Brondial, on the other hand, scored all five of his points during a 9-0 run by San Miguel that put them back in the lead, 87-76. Newsome had 24 points, six rebounds, and four assists to lead the Bolts, but he also turned the ball over seven times.
