Gilas Pilipinas 3x3 Begins Quest to Reclaim SEA Games Gold vs. Laos
The Philippine men’s 3×3 basketball team is set to kick off their Southeast Asian Games campaign by facing Laos in their opening game, aiming to reclaim the gold medal. Spearheading the Gilas Pilipinas squad are Almond Vosotros, the PBA 3×3 scoring champion, along with Joseph Eriobu, Lervin Flores, and Joseph Sedurifa.
Following their match against Laos, the Filipinos will go head-to-head against Vietnam, who won the silver medal in last year’s tournament, before wrapping up their Pool 1A campaign against Indonesia on May 6th. Despite failing to retain the gold medal in Hanoi, Vietnam, last year, the Philippines was able to secure the bronze medal with the help of Limitless Appmasters, led by big man Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser.
In Pool 1B, defending champions Thailand leads the pack alongside Singapore, Malaysia, and host Cambodia.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the crossover semifinals, which will be held the following day. The winners of those semifinals will play each other on the same day for the gold medal.
Ronnie Magsanoc, the national 3×3 project director, has revealed that the team coached by Lester Del Rosario will have their final practice session together on Wednesday and depart for Phnom Penh on Thursday. Earlier, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) had announced the training team’s final eight-man pool, including Alfred Batino, Samboy De Leon, Jeff Manday, and Jorey Napoles.
